DALLAS (KDAF) — In a partnership that’s sure to make waves, Cars for Kids and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas unveiled a generous donation to support the Y’s Safety Around Water Program, an initiative designed to prevent childhood drowning.
Cars for Kids donated a newly wrapped van, now dedicated to transporting YMCA staff and equipment to North Texas sites where water safety education is delivered free of charge.
On Oct. 10, the van debuted with a candy-filled scavenger hunt for local kids who got a sweet tour of the new ride. This van, which allows up to seven kids, is now giving children access to the Y’s life-saving program.
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in preschoolers and the second leading cause in school-aged children. To combat this, the YMCA’s mobile teams of lifeguards and swim instructors visit apartment complexes, schools, and community pools, teaching vital swimming skills and water safety tips.
“We know that the best protection against drowning is close supervision of children, but right behind that is having traditional swimming lessons,” Jennifer Pewitt, Associate Vice President of Aquatics for the YMCA, said. “This van is going to enable us to reach more people in our community.”
“We’re very honored to be a part of this,” Raul E. Machuca Jr., Cars for Kids’ Chief Marketing Officer, added. “Cars for Kids was born to help the students of Texas Can Academies, but now with this partnership with the YMCA, we continue to drive our mission forward by giving them this van to be able to take these kids to the Safety Around Water Program.”
Together, Cars for Kids and the YMCA are making North Texas a safer, stronger community, one splash at a time. Support initiatives like this by donating your vehicle—running or not—to Cars for Kids. Visit CarsForKids.org or call 866-835-5437 for more information.
